I have always wanted to fly an aircraft to the Wright Brother's Memorial Park. Now that I am back in the area and a qualified pilot I started planning the trip.

I wanted to be ready for any kind of weather, so I worked on getting my civilian instrument rating current by the rules and then went a little further getting myslef oriented to the instruments in a civilian aircraft. For some reason, they think having a needle in the cockpit that points to the navigation station (VOR) is too easy. It seems most newer civilian aircraft have this, but the older ones don't. That took some getting used to on my part.

My brother, Scott, was planning a trip down to the outer banks and was going to be real close to Kitty Hawk, so that spurred my plannning along.

I rented an aircraft and took the whole family along. We landed out at the memorial on Friday for a quick walk-around and then took back off and headed to Manteo Island where we kept the plane.

On Saturday, I took Scott and his girlfriend for a flight along the islands.

On Sunday it was time to head home, always a bummer. We ended up having to divert to another airfield as the home field was closed down due to an aircraft that forgot to lower its landing gear prior to landing. Fortunately, the flying club already had someone on the way to pick us up.

On to the pictures.......
